  • The Milwaukee Brewers acquired outfielder Luis Matos from the San Francisco Giants for cash.
  • The trade comes after right-handed hitters Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn suffered broken hands.
  • Matos, a former top prospect, was recently designated for assignment by the Giants.
  • In 178 major league games, Matos has a .231 batting average with 15 home runs.

Down a pair of right-handed hitters after the recent broken hands suffered by Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn, the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, March 30 acquired outfielder Luis Matos from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for cash.

Matos, 24, is a onetime vaunted prospect who never quite panned out while playing parts of the previous three seasons in San Francisco.

He had been designated for assignment prior to the Giants setting their opening-day roster and lost his spot to, ironically, Jared Oliva – an outfielder who spent all of 2025 in the Brewers organization at Class AAA Nashville.

In 178 major league games since 2023, Matos has compiled a .231 average, 15 home runs and 61 runs batted in with an OPS of .650 while accounting for minus-0.7 wins above replacement. His biggest season was 2025, when he hit .221/8/22/.691 in 57 games while starting in all three outfield spots.

Brewers fans might remember Matos from the Giants’ visit to Milwaukee last August, when he collected six hits – including a pair of homers – and drove in four runs as San Francisco took two of three games in the teams’ series.

To make room on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Sammy Peralta was designated for assignment.
