Next week, shoppers throughout Britain will find some of their go-to high-street chains shutting their doors for an entire day. Leading retailers spanning groceries, clothing, and fast food will close for 24 hours. Household names including Tesco, Aldi and Greggs are amongst those giving employees a day off to mark the Easter holiday.
Customers are being urged to plan accordingly to prevent inconvenience, particularly for essential purchases. Most firms are encouraging shoppers to consult their websites for details of individual branches. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of all retailers participating in the one-day Easter Sunday shutdown.
Fashion retailers
Primark: Primark will shut all of its UK stores on Easter Sunday, April 5. The retailer boasts approximately 190 branches nationwide, including 160 in England. A spokesperson advised that some stores may adjust their operating hours over the Easter weekend, so customers are encouraged to verify their local branch’s schedule before visiting.
As highlighted by the Mirror, a Primark spokesperson stated: “Primark stores across the UK will be open across the Easter weekend; however, on Easter Sunday, only stores in Scotland will be open, and all stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be closed. Stores may also be operating different hours to normal, so we recommend that customers check our website for their local store opening times before visiting to avoid disappointment.”
Supermarkets
During this period, major supermarkets will have varying operating hours, with opening and closing times differing based on the size of each store.
Tesco: All Tesco stores will be closed on Sunday, except for large stores in Scotland, which will maintain their regular hours. On Easter Monday, most stores will operate shorter hours from 8am to 6pm.
Sainsbury’s: On Easter Sunday, most Sainsbury’s stores will be shut, although branches in Scotland will stay open, and some Sainsbury’s Local stores may operate. Shoppers are advised to check their local store. On Easter Monday, most larger stores will be open from 8am to 8pm, while Sainsbury’s Local stores are generally expected to run as usual.
Morrisons: The majority of Morrisons stores will be closed on Sunday, with only a few locations in Scotland anticipated to open. Customers wishing to visit are advised to check their nearest branch for confirmation.
Asda: Asda outlets will be shut on Easter Sunday. On Easter Monday, the majority will operate from 8am to 10pm.
Co-op: Co-op is predominantly a convenience store operator, and all Co-op convenience stores remain open as usual throughout the Easter long weekend to serve communities. This is between 7 am and 10 pm. Co-op’s larger stores/supermarkets in England, Wales & Northern Ireland close on Easter Sunday.
Lidl: All Lidl branches in England and Wales will be shut on Sunday, while Scottish locations will remain open. Trading hours will differ on Easter Monday, so it’s advisable to verify your nearest branch.
Waitrose: Waitrose hasn’t announced its Easter schedule yet, but most branches are anticipated to operate reduced hours on Good Friday, 4 April and Easter Monday, based on the previous year’s patterns, as reported by Secret London. Branches should operate normally on Easter Saturday, while most will be shut on Easter Sunday, although Little Waitrose outlets may trade with shorter hours.
Aldi: Most Aldi branches will trade from 8am to 9pm on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Outlets will be closed on Easter Sunday, except in Scotland, so check locally. On Easter Monday, the majority will trade from 8am to 8pm.
M&S: Marks & Spencer’s trading hours vary across the UK, so shoppers should check their nearest branch. Most are anticipated to be shut on Easter Sunday, with curtailed hours likely throughout the remainder of the bank holiday weekend.
Household retailers
Home Bargains: Home Bargains will shut 560 stores for the day, impacting branches across England and Wales. Roughly 70 stores in Scotland will continue trading as normal. A spokesperson said: “All Home Bargains stores in England and Wales will be closed on Easter Sunday.” Customers can still pop in on Good Friday, although stores will operate with shortened hours from 9am to 7pm. Standard opening hours of 9 am to 7 pm will return on Easter Monday.
B&M: B&M will shut the vast majority of its stores throughout the UK on Easter Sunday, with Scottish outlets expected to continue trading as normal. Stores in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be shut for the day but will reopen for the remainder of the Bank Holiday weekend. A spokesperson confirmed that all B&M stores will trade normally on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Shoppers uncertain about whether their nearest B&M will be open can verify this by using the store locator facility on the retailer’s website or through the store locator facility on its mobile app.
IKEA: All 22 IKEA stores in the UK will trade as usual over the Easter weekend, apart from Easter Sunday. 20 Stores in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will close, while the Glasgow and Edinburgh branches in Scotland will continue trading. Customers can visit all stores on Good Friday, Saturday, and Easter Monday, although opening times may differ, so it’s advisable to check your nearest store before setting off.
Food
Greggs: Numerous Greggs outlets are shut over Easter, though some petrol stations and travel locations may open with restricted hours. As opening times can differ by location, it’s advisable to confirm before visiting.
You can utilise the Greggs Store Finder on the official website for current hours. Alternatively, search “Greggs near me” on Google Maps or check delivery apps. For absolute certainty, particularly during holidays, it’s recommended to contact your local branch directly.
On the official site, a spokesperson revealed: “Greggs stores often operate on reduced hours during holidays, and some branches may close completely on major festive days. Timings can vary by location, especially for outlets in shopping centres, airports, and petrol stations. To avoid disappointment, it’s always best to check your local Greggs store finder for the most accurate timetable.”
