Northern Irish Olympic hero Mary Peters’s sporting legacy to be celebrated in new play

The project brings together youth theatre and storytelling to celebrate women in sport and the power of perseverance

A new play will put Northern Irish Olympic hero Lady Mary Peters on the podium once again.
Gold Medal Mary is set against the backdrop of a politically turbulent Belfast, exploring themes of resilience, ambition and determination through the eyes of a young Mary Peters striving to succeed against the odds.
Young performers from The Rainbow Factory School of Performing Arts will take to the stage at The MAC Belfast on April 28 in this original theatre production developed in partnership with The Mary Peters Trust.

A spokesperson for The Rainbow Factory said that the project brings together youth theatre and storytelling to celebrate women in sport and the power of perseverance.

They said: “Gold Medal Mary tells the inspiring story of the young woman who would go on to win Olympic gold in the pentathlon at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
“The production is written and directed by Maire Campbell and performed by a talented cast of young people aged 10-21 from The Rainbow Factory School of Performing Arts.
“YouthAction Northern Ireland is a leading youth work organisation supporting young people across Northern Ireland to realise their potential and make a positive contribution to society.
“The organisation’s Rainbow Factory programme delivers high-quality performing arts training rooted in youth work values, helping young people build confidence, creativity and resilience while developing skills both on and off the stage.”
