Marion woman cited, accused of starting Jumping Branch Fire

A Marion woman is accused of starting a wildfire that has burned 185 acres in McDowell County.

The North Carolina Forest Service says Hilary Brooke Inman, 38, was cited and charged under North Carolina General Statute 14-138.1 for starting a fire on grassland, brushland or woodland without fully extinguishing it.

In a Tuesday, March 31, press release, state forest officials said the Jumping Branch Fire was started by “improperly discarded smoking material.”

As of Monday evening, the fire is 185 acres in size and 20% contained.

A statewide burn ban went into effect Saturday, March 28, and will remain in effect until further notice.
