First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for strong to severe storms and possible flooding

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert remains up for severe weather, including strong to severe storms and the risk for flooding and flash flooding. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is posted for the whole area through 9PM, and a Flood Watch is posted into Wednesday. Flooding will likely be the biggest concern, with many areas already seeing 1-2″ of rain and another half inch to inch of rain still to come. The greatest risk of flooding would be where training thunderstorms occur, meaning one storm after another. Don’t drive through flooded roads. It is always best to find another way around.

Severe thunderstorms are also a possibility through about 9PM. Scattered storms continue to move through this evening, and while not everybody will see a storm, a few storms will be strong, possibly severe with gusty winds and hail. There is a small chance of an isolated tornado, especially in the Southern Tier and southern Finger Lakes. The storm threat will begin to diminish by 9PM, as a cold front approaches. Though the storms may be slow to exit.

Wednesday will be a much quieter, but cooler day with highs back in the 40s under a mainly gray sky. A few showers will still be possible, especially later in the day, but we’ll be clear of storms. We’ll then begin our next warm up, with highs back in the 50s on Thursday, and into the 60s on Friday and Saturday. At this point, Easter Sunday may start off mild, but a cold front will quickly drop our temperatures and rain as it moves in. So, plan on Easter umbrellas for Sunday services.
