A promising update about Avatar 4 and 5 has emerged, offering some clarity to the epic sci-fi franchise’s future. The threequel, Fire and Ash, hit theaters last December. It garnered primarily positive reviews, but also faced some criticism for repeating the story structure of the previous ones. Nonetheless, the film became a huge box office success, grossing $1.4 billion. Furthermore, it secured numerous awards and award nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Rae Sanchini hints work on Avatar 4 and even Part 5 could start ‘soon’
Avatar 4 and 5 could begin production soon due to the intense preparation required, according to franchise producer Rae Sanchini.
While speaking with ScreenRant to promote Avatar: Fire and Ash’s digital release, Sanchini stated that the sequels involve “a very long lead time process.” She added, “So we’re going to have to get started on those pretty soon.”
Earlier this month, James Cameron revealed to the outlet at the Saturn Awards that he and the creatives have not yet decided on making more films. However, he said they were “very likely” to be realized. He also teased some changes, promising he would utilize “lessons” from the first three films’ development and audience feedback for the sequels.
The veteran filmmaker elaborated by sharing an example: a larger role for Oona Chaplin’s Varang in future movies. He compared this to Payakan’s part in the films. Cameron noted that the positive reception towards the character in The Way of Water encouraged his inclusion in the threequel.
Avatar 4 currently has a December 21, 2029, release date. Cameron told PEOPLE in 2023, before Fire and Ash’s release, that he shot part of the fourth installment due to the younger characters experiencing a “big time jump.” He added, “We see them, and then we go away for six years, and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven’t shot yet. So we’ll start on that after three is released.”
Meanwhile, Avatar 5 is scheduled for December 19, 2031. Late producer Jon Landau told Gizmodo in 2022 that it would see Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri visit Jake Sully’s original home, Earth.
