T.J. Hughes and Kris Knoblauch are now linked as the Edmonton Oilers push to land the Michigan center once his season ends.
The Edmonton Oilers are not sitting back here. They’re actively tracking Hughes as a potential late-season addition.
And the fit is obvious when you look at how this roster is built.
Hughes produced 56 points in 39 games at Michigan. That’s top-line college production from a player trusted in every situation.
But this isn’t about adding flash to an already skilled group.
It’s about giving Knoblauch another reliable option down the middle.
Oilers target depth down the middle
The Oilers have elite firepower up front. What they’ve needed is more stability in the bottom six, especially away from the puck.
Hughes brings that detail.
He plays a strong two-way game, supports low in the defensive zone, and doesn’t cheat for offense. That’s the type of player coaches lean on during tight games.
Marco D’Amico reported that a double-digit number of NHL teams are expected to pursue Hughes. Edmonton is right in that mix.
And they have a clear pitch.
There’s room in this lineup for a center who can handle responsible minutes and grow into a bigger role over time. Hughes wouldn’t be buried here.
He’d be competing for real ice right away.
There’s also the timing factor.
Hughes turned down NHL interest last year and returned to Michigan. That decision pushed his value higher across the league.
Now teams view him as closer to NHL-ready.
For Edmonton, that matters.
The Oilers are in a win-now window, but they still need cost-controlled players who can contribute. An entry-level deal checks that box immediately.
And stylistically, Hughes fits what this team lacks.
He can extend possession, win pucks along the boards, and give the Oilers cleaner exits from their own zone. That helps everyone up the lineup.
This won’t drag out forever.
Once Michigan’s season wraps, expect a quick decision. Edmonton is pushing, and they’re positioned to make it count.
