Flyers get unexpected boost as Tyson Foerster returns to lineup

Tyson Foerster was supposed to miss the rest of the season. The Philadelphia Flyers were fully expecting to be without one of their best wingers for multiple months and resigned with the fact that they will just try it all again next season, with him ready to go again at training camp this fall, after he suffered a brutal injury during a game all the way back in December.
Well, they’re completely wrong and Foerster is now making a shockingly early return to the Flyers lineup in the middle of the most important stretch of games for this season.
At Thursday’s morning skate, Foerster was seen out their in the regular jersey, but it was nothing new. He shed the non-contact jersey a couple weeks ago and has been regularly taking part in Flyers morning skates before games, but just to get back on the ice. Well, before the Flyers take on the Detroit Red Wings it is much more than just getting his legs back after suffering that unfortunate upper-body injury months ago.
Foerster was seen taking part in line rushes with Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett and the rest of the lineup made it loud and clear: The 24-year-old winger is making his return to the Flyers.
Tyson Foerster on a line with Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett. Teammates were excited. Looks like he might return tonight. We’ll see.

This is massive.
Tyson Foerster shockingly returns to Flyers for playoff push
All the way back on December 1, in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Foerster wound up for a beauty of a one-timer and then after swinging his stick with all his might, went down to the ice in incredible pain. He suffered some sort of injury to his arm or shoulder, and was immediately declared out for two to three months.
After a couple more weeks, it was later discovered that he needed surgery for a full recovery and then was labeled as out for the rest of the season. That was roughly three and a half months ago. And even with the Flyers firmly in a playoff spot at that time, they were comfortable just letting it be known that one of the best wingers is going to miss the rest of their campaign and be ready for the fall.
Well, now after a couple weeks of will-he-won’t-he while reporters all kind of eyeing up that he’s in a regular jersey, but specifically mentioning that morning skate doesn’t have contact typically, so to not really read too much into it — Foerster is back and at the perfect time.
Even with Tuesday’s regulation loss to the Washington Capitals, the Flyers remain just two points out of a playoff spot, and even just three points away from third place in the Metropolitan division. The only problem is that they are battling it out with the Red Wings, Senators, Blue Jackets, and Islanders for these spots — all five teams are within three points of each other. Foerster is coming back at the perfect time.
What the lineup looks like with Foerster’s return
And maybe the best part of it, is looking up and down the current Flyers lineup at morning skate and nodding and nodding and nodding some more.
Per NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jordan Hall, the Flyers lineup for Thursday’s all-important game against Detroit, is as follows:
Tyson Foerster — Trevor Zegras — Owen Tippett
Travis Konecny — Christian Dvorak — Porter Martone
Denver Barkey — Noah Cates — Matvei Michkov
Sean Couturier — Luke Glendening — Carl Grundstrom
That is disgusting filth. Everyone just settles right in their place in the lineup so perfectly — it’s beautiful.
Foerster is taking his rightful place in the top six. Earlier this week, it was Carl Grundstrom that had that spot next to Zegras and Tippett, as we all speculated that it was them warming the seat for Porter Martone’s debut. And now, we truly see that it was Foerster they were waiting on. It’s an instant upgrade that makes this lineup incredibly more dangerous all throughout.
Each line has someone that can shoot the puck incredibly well, can make some plays, has some defensive responsibility, and can get physical if needed. With just one little inclusion and return of a player they have been missing for most of the season, balance is suddenly a huge asset for the Flyers.
Foerster was also seen on the top power-play unit, just to confirm even further that he’s coming back. And, the units are nasty.
Power play units:
Zegras, Konecny, Foerster, Dvorak, Ristolainen
Michkov, Martone, Tippett, Cates, Drysdale

Revealing that Porter Martone and Matvei Michkov are playing together on the man advantage in the final paragraphs of a blog? We’re sorry.
We can’t wait for puck drop.
Before his injury, Foerster was on a heater. In 21 games, the winger scored 10 goals and 13 points while averaging almost two shots on goal a game and had 75 total shot attempts while averaging 17:27 time-on-ice. All that and being one of the best defensive players on the team.
