Why buying fruits and vegetables in season matters
If you buy perfect-looking strawberries but they taste like cardboard, it’s not you, it’s the season. Buying in season ensures better flavor, nutrition, and value.

The annual Downtown Topeka Farmers Market is returning this weekend.
The market has been a Topeka tradition since the 1930s, operating every Saturday morning from April through October and attracting thousands of local residents and out‑of‑town visitors.
According to the Downtown Topeka Farmers Market website, people come each week to shop, browse, meet friends and neighbors, as well as make new connections at the open‑air market.
Richard Britt, chairman of the Downtown Topeka Farmers Market and owner of Britt’s Farm, said customers return year after year and consistently support the market’s local vendors. Britt has been involved with the market for more than 20 years.
When will the Downtown Topeka Farmers Market be open?
This year, the market will begin 7:30 a.m. to noon on April 4 at 6th and Harrison in downtown Topeka.
The market will run every weekend after April 4 through the last weekend in October 2026.
“Our faithful customers are wanting their fresh produce, fresh eggs, fresh baked goods,” Britt said. “Every week, we still see lots of new people also. It’s just amazing to me how Topeka rallies around the market so well.”
What can you find at this year’s market?
Britt said there will be about nine new vendors present at this year’s market.
Along with those nine, there will be more than 30 returning vendors. Those vendors offer items from handmade wooden boards, baked goods, handmade jewelry and T-shirts and more.
Britt said activities will continue throughout the market. This year, the market will kick off with an Easter egg hunt for children as they arrive. Kids can then take part in a scavenger hunt, finding items throughout the market. As they locate each item, they’ll receive small amounts of money they can use to purchase goods from vendors.
“We’re working on a lot of new things at the market,” Britt said. “It’s not just the same, we’re going to try and do a few new things every year.”
