Bob Weeks Picks Six – Valero Texas Open

Last week: For the second week in a row, Pick Six was shut out. We don’t mind considering the story of the guy who won. Gary Woodland is one of the best golf stories in years so we’re happy with that even if we didn’t have a ticket on it.

This Week: The last tournament before the Masters and the second leg of the Texas two-stop. TPC San Antonio Oaks Course plays host once again will likely provide a stiff test as it has done the last few years. Wind is almost a constant and the forecast is for gusts up to 30 kms for most of the tournament. The course demands some distance off the tee although shorter hitters have won here, such as Brian Harman last year. Greens in regulation is another key stat if past winners are any indication.

To Win

Tommy Fleetwood +1500

Playing well coming in with top-10 finishes in three of the last four tournaments he’s played. He’s currently 16th in Strokes Gained: Total and the only worrisome part of his game so far is on the greens where he has struggled for consistency.

Robert MacIntyre +1800

Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Players, MacIntyre is currently 20th in Strokes Gained: Total. His putter is also performing well as he sits sixth in that category. Another reason to like him is as a Scotsman, he knows how to play in the wind which will be blowing this week.

Top 10

Hideki Matsuyama +250

Although he missed the cut here last year, Matsuyama preceded that with two finishes inside the top 20. A fairly stead game that has him 17th in Strokes Gained: Total. Four finishes so far this year inside the top 15.

Keith Mitchell +340

Great off the tee and into the greens — he’s 23rd in Greens in Regulation – Mitchell has a steady, solid game that seems to be ready for a big finish. He tied for 14th last week and has not missed a cut in his nine starts so far this year.

Top 20

Denny McCarthy +175

Three top-20 finishes in his last three starts here including a runner-up finish two years ago. Posted a tie for 12th last week in Houston with a very solid Sunday 66.

Ryo Hisatsune +210

Tied for fifth here last year with a second-round 67 in the winds. So far this year he’s had four top-15 finishes, the most recent coming at the Players. He’s 24th in Total Driving which means long and straight, and that could be a huge help this week.

Extras

Top Canadian

Sudarshan Yellamaraju +220

Hits it long and that is good in San Antonio

Top South American

Jhonattan Vegas +185

A solid tie for 14th last week in Houston.
