Somehow, Jude Bellingham is still only 22 years old, and he has now become the youngest men’s player to earn 50 caps for England.
After being named in England’s starting XI to face Ghana in their second game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Jude Bellingham has broken yet another record by becoming the youngest player to reach 50 caps for England’s men’s team.
It’s reflective of the Three Lions’ recent willingness to give young players regular opportunities on the international stage, with four of the seven youngest players to have achieved 50 England caps having done so since 2020.
Aged 22 years and 359 days, Bellingham has broken the record previously held by Wayne Rooney, who won his 50th cap when he was 23 years and 159 days old. In total, 34 of Bellingham’s 50 England appearances have come from the start.
Bellingham made his England debut in relatively inconspicuous circumstances at just 17 years and 137 days old, becoming the third-youngest player to represent the Three Lions. He came off the bench in the 73rd minute of a 2020 international friendly against the Republic of Ireland, which had to be played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 protocols.
Bellingham had to wait a couple of years before he scored his first goal for his country, which came in England’s first game of the 2022 World Cup against Iran (also Bellingham’s first appearance at a World Cup). He was found in the box by a Luke Shaw cross and produced a fabulous looping header that found its way into the far corner, opening England’s account in Qatar.
The Real Madrid midfielder has built a reputation for coming to the fore in big moments at club level, and showed that ability during the 2024 UEFA European Championships.
Bellingham scored another header, this time against Serbia, to secure victory for Gareth Southgate’s side in their opening game of the tournament, before netting a stunning overhead kick to equalise against Slovakia in second-half stoppage time in the round of 16. It remains England’s latest goal in regulation time of a European Championship match (94:34).
In his previous 49 England appearances, Bellingham has scored seven goals and produced seven assists, his most recent goal contribution coming last time out against Croatia, when he scored England’s third goal of their 4-2 victory in their opening World Cup game in Dallas.
At the time, it made him one of five European players to have scored at the last three major tournaments (Euros/World Cup), and the youngest to do so.
Four of Bellingham’s seven strikes for the Three Lions have come at major tournaments. This ratio (57%) is the highest of any England player to have more than five goals.
