Toronto, Portland Build Their Foundations for the Future

The WNBA offseason is in a full sprint after the league and the players’ union negotiated a new CBA agreement, and the first order of business comes on Friday as the W hosts its 2026 expansion draft for the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire.

Last year, the then-first timers Golden State Valkyries got to handpick their rosters, but now two fresh teams will have the opportunity to build their foundation five weeks away from the season-opener. The newcomers can select their talent from a player pool made available by the league’s 13 current teams in the two-round, snake-draft format. Which WNBA teams will bid farewell to beloved stars? Will the Tempo and Fire make the right moves to set them up for the future?

Follow along in Sports Illustrated’s live blog of all the draft action, including which key WNBA players will get poached this offseason.
