An update has emerged regarding the possibility of The Rock being revealed to be Randy Orton’s mystery caller on WWE TV.

Since the March 16 episode of WWE Raw, Randy Orton has been shown speaking on the phone with an unknown individual.

While Orton has stated that this person has reminded him that he is a “killer” once again following his heel turn on Cody Rhodes, the teases have only led to speculationthus far, with names such as “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Ric Flair and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson being banded around amongst fans.

With the mystery caller’s identity set to finally be revealed on the Friday, April 3 episode of SmackDown, Dave Meltzer has provided an update on The Rock potentially being Orton’s “mentor” in the shadows.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer wrote:

Orton has a mentor who has been teased for weeks and was to be announced on the 4/3 Smackdown show.

As noted, while Dwayne Johnson fits the bill and would be the biggest addition for a show that is behind on ticket sales, those in the company have denied the name to us.

As noted before, if it was Johnson, it’s likely to be kept a secret from everyone but Nick Khan, Paul Levesque, and maybe Rhodes and Orton.

But my impression is they have a name that at least those in the inner circle are aware of. They could still be working them but they are not of that impression.

What Did WWE Say About The Rock Potentially Being The Culprit?

Following Randy Orton’s mystery first phone call on the January 16 episode of Raw, WWE.com published an article which ran down a list of names who could have been in the ear of “The Viper.”

The Rock was one of those names, with WWE’s Mark Kaboly writing the following about “The Final Boss” having a role in turning Randy Orton heel:

“Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: We haven’t seen The Rock in more than a year. However, he does fit the description of who could be on the phone, another Royal Family who also had a significant part in Cody Rhodes’ last two WrestleMania appearances.

“The Final Boss had a main role in John Cena’s “bad guy” turn last year. Could he be involved in turning another well-loved legend? “It makes complete sense and maybe the most sense of all.”

Would The Rock Make Sense?

While The Rock and Randy Orton haven’t crossed paths much in WWE over the years, they are both legendary third-generation stars who have plenty of history with Cody Rhodes.

As mentioned in WWE’s article, The Rock had a major hand in turning John Cena heel last year ahead of Cena’s WrestleMania 41 main event with Cody Rhodes, so perhaps history could repeat itself with Orton.

Not only would The Rock’s involvement likely boost the amount of interest in WrestleMania 42, but it would be a way for WWE to continue to tell the story of “The Final Boss” and “The American Nightmare.”

While fans would have hoped to see a match between the two by now, The Rock’s involvement in Orton’s heel turn could tide things along until he eventually returns to WWE TV for a more substantial role with Rhodes.
