Tarris Reed career timeline: Why UConn star transferred to Storrs after starting college at Michigan

Tarris Reed is one of the dominant Huskies who has helped Connecticut reach the 2026 Final Four. UConn is one of four teams still alive in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, and one of the others is Michigan. While these programs aren’t usually linked, they have a strong one this year.
Reed began his career at Michigan. He mainly came off the bench as a freshman, and then carved out a starting role as a sophomore. Reed then opted to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility left. He landed with UConn and went back to a bench role his first year, before re-joining the starting lineup as a senior.
Reed had the best season of his collegiate career in his final one with the Huskies and now has his sights set not only on a national championship but also on the NBA.

Tarris Reed career timeline
Michigan (2022-2024)
Reed started his high school career at Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis, Missouri. Ahead of his senior year, he transferred to Link Year Prep Academy in Branson, Missouri.
He was ranked as a four-star recruit and chose to commit to Michigan despite other offers from Michigan State, Ohio State, Florida, Illinois and Kansas, among others.
In his first year at Michigan, he came off the bench and averaged 12.6 minutes per game. Reed was a solid role player, but really didn’t have a chance to shine until his sophomore season. He started 31 of the 32 games he played. Reed played 26.6 minutes per game and averaged nine points and 7.2 boards. The 6-10 forward averaged 1.4 blocks per game.
After Juwan Howard was fired at the end of the 2023-2024 season, Reed entered the transfer portal and committed to UConn.
UConn (2024-present)
Reed went from starting at Michigan back to being a role player in his first year at UConn. He saw action in 35 games, but drew only one start. Reed averaged 9.6 points and 7.3 boards in 19.9 minutes per game.
He secured a spot back in the starting lineup in 2025 as a starter. Reed started all 33 games the Huskies played and nearly averaged a double-double with 14.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He helped UConn to the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Reed dominated the competition, and his efforts earned him the Most Outstanding Player Award for the East All-Region Team.
Reed wasn’t really on draft boards ahead of his performance in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. He was considered a late-second-round prospect, but his consistency in the tournament led ESPN to call him a riser, with his draft stock improving.
