J.J. Spaun Says His Wife Melody Is the “Backbone” of Their Family

Meet J.J. Spaun’s Wife, Melody SpaunBen Jared
J.J. Spaun made a name for himself last summer as the winner of the 2025 U.S. Open Golf Championship in June. The PGA Tour golfer has been on a bit of a career renaissance lately.
“I’ve hit a peak in my career where I’m realizing my potential,” Spaun told T&C last year. “To see all these close calls I had earlier in the year at pretty big events where I had chances to win, it was definitely disappointing, not getting the win, but I knew that was a good sign of where I was at, not just golf wise, but mentally and how I was handling those situations. Then it just all led up to the U.S. Open where I was staying in my lane, playing my own game, and the next thing you know, I’m in contention.”
Cheering him on from the sidelines was his wife of six years, Melody. “They were super proud of me,” Spaun said of his family after his U.S. Open victory. “They see how hard I work, and especially my wife and even my oldest daughter, she’s always like, ‘You’re always golfing!’ She always expects me to bring back a trophy, and it was so cool to have them there and her actually see me win a trophy and accept it in front of her. So now every time I go golfing, she’s expecting me to win. So no pressure.”
Curious to learn more about J.J. Spaun’s wife? Here’s seven facts you need to know about Melody Spaun:
1. J.J. took Melody mini-golfing for their first date…and she was less than impressed.
J.J. and Melody were introduced by mutual friends in 2013. While Melody is J.J.’s number one fan now, she wasn’t always a fan of the sport. “I was like, yeah, I’m a pro golfer. Because I thought I was cool,” he told Golf.com in 2023 about their first date. “But she’s like, ‘I don’t even know. What does that mean? Like, does that mean you’re like rich or something?’ I was like, no. And she’s like, I don’t really care. And I was like, all right. And we went like mini-golfing or something, and she’s like, ‘This is lame.’”
2. It took Melody awhile to warm up to golf life.
Melody first joined J.J. on the tour at the Northern Trust Open (now the Genesis Invitational) in 2016. “She was, like, kind of intimidated by, like, everything. And I’m like, ‘This is the life you’re going to live, get used to it,’” he later told reporters at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in 2023, according to Golf Monthly.
3. The couple has been together for 12 years and counting.
They married in 2019, and they now have two daughters together: Emerson Lili, 5, and Violet, 2.
4. Melody instituted a “five-hour rule” for J.J.
A work-life balance is important for everyone, but it’s also crucial for a healthy relationship. Melody is on top of things, helping J.J. maintain his focus with a “five-hour rule,” which he explained to Golf in that 2023 interview as five hours of practice time to focus, and then he can spend the rest of the day with his family. “Yeah, so it kind of makes me productive,” the golfer said. “I don’t mess around and fraternize or socialize with everyone. Kind of just do my thing.”
5. She keeps a very low profile.
While she does support her husband publicly on the tour, Melody does not have any public social media accounts. She does appear on his accounts, however, and J.J. has more than 17,500 Instagram followers.
6. Melody is J.J.’s inspiration.

Spaun realized his potential this year and won his first major, the U.S. Open, in June, and they were there with him to celebrate at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania to celebrate after his win.
When asked by Town & Country about his inspiration and what keeps him going, Spaun replied, “My family. My kids, my wife, they do so much. They sacrifice so much with me being gone and even when I’m at home on off weeks, I’m still practicing five, six hours a day; they understand what I have to do to stay sharp and prepared to come out here and play well. So that’s why I really appreciate those weeks off, when I can have more than one week off to spend more time with them and do fun things. They’re the reason why I’m so motivated and the reason why I try to be the best person I can be and be the best example I can be. So as long as I’m making them happy, I don’t really care what anyone else thinks.”
7. J.J. calls her the “backbone” of the family.
While J.J. gets all the glory on the green, no one sees what goes on behind-the-scenes. His family is there to support him—though managing two young children and appearing composed on television before a crowd of cameras was no small task. “My wife had to deal with all of the stress of getting the girls there and making sure they looked cute for TV,” J.J. told US Weekly. “Having to run out at the right time and be presentable. I know it was stressful for her.” He added, “She didn’t hit a shot, but she’s feeling drained just being the backbone of our whole family.”
