Maine’s high court calls ranked-choice voting expansion unconstitutional

AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) — A Democratic bill to expand the use of ranked-choice voting would violate the Maine Constitution, the state’s high court said in a Monday opinion.

The bill was looking to expand ranked-choice voting to governor and the Maine Legislature.

It’s currently used in general elections for Congress and primaries for state and federal offices.

The debate came down to whether ranked-choice voting violated constitutional requirements that certain state offices be decided by a plurality, which is the highest total of votes, rather than a majority, which is more than 50 percent.
