Fireball spotted in the sky across the Philadelphia region

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A fireball seen streaking across the sky Tuesday afternoon sparked hundreds of reports across the tri-state area.

According to NASA, the meteor first became visible around 2:34 p.m. at an altitude of about 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Mastic Beach on Long Island.

Traveling southwest at roughly 30,000 mph, the fireball eventually disintegrated about 27 miles above Galloway Township, New Jersey.

Video captured by Brittany Wilhelmy shows the bright fireball as it streaked across the sky.

The American Meteor Society logged more than 200 reports from people in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York and Connecticut.
