For many Veterans navigating the complexities of homelessness, the biggest hurdle isn’t just finding housing—it’s having the stability to keep it. The Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, a collaborative initiative between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and VA, was created to address both challenges.

By combining HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance with VA’s comprehensive case management and supportive services, HUD-VASH provides a path to permanent, independent housing for Veterans.

How it works

HUD-VASH prioritizes getting Veterans into safe, stable housing as quickly as possible—without preconditions—under the belief that it is much easier to manage one’s health, sobriety, and employment when you don’t have to worry about where you’ll sleep each night.

After a Veteran is housed, the “VASH” (VA Supportive Housing) component of the program continues. Every participant is paired with a trained VA case manager who provides:

  • Clinical Support: Direct connection to primary care, mental health services, and substance use treatment.
  • Life Skills: Practical help with budgeting for rent, understanding a lease, and maintaining a positive relationship with their landlord.
  • Long-Term Support: Ongoing case management that adapts to a Veteran’s needs and continues for as long as needed to help them remain stable in their home.

When basic needs are met first, Veterans are empowered to focus on the future.

Is HUD-VASH right for you or a Veteran you know?

The program is specifically tailored for Veterans experiencing homelessness who have a need for ongoing case management due to more complex challenges, such as chronic health conditions, that can make staying housed feel out of reach. As of March 2026, more than 95,000 formerly homeless Veterans were living in homes under lease through HUD-VASH, and since 2008, the program has housed nearly 250,000 Veterans.

It is important to know that receiving this help doesn’t cost you your independence. Because the program uses a voucher system, you have the freedom to choose your own housing in the private market, provided the landlord accepts the voucher and the unit meets safety standards. Your case manager is a partner in ensuring that the house remains a home, and the program is designed to honor Veterans’ choices for care.

Whether you are currently displaced or at risk of losing your home, trained VA counselors are available around the clock to listen and discuss your needs, check your eligibility, and connect you with local VA Homeless Program team members in your area.
