The M621 in Leeds was closed on Friday morning after a woman was hit by a car.
Drivers were warned the closure would be in place “for some time” following the incident on the clockwise side of the motorway, West Yorkshire Police said.
Officers were called at 4.50am following reports of a collision with a woman who was “in the carriageway” near junction one for Holbeck at the time.
She suffered serious injuries.
A police spokesperson said: “The incident remains ongoing and a full road closure remains in place on both sides of the carriageway with diversions in place.
“The closure is expected to be in place for some time and motorists are thanked for their patience while necessary incident investigation work takes place.”
