Martim Fernandes had a short but eventful appearance for Porto in the Europa League on Thursday night as he scored a bizarre own goal before shortly after having to leave the pitch with an injury.

The Porto fans were still celebrating seeing their side take the lead at the Estadio Dragao in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Nottingham Forest when the majority of the 50,000-capacity stadium was stunned into silence.

Even the 3,000 or so Forest fans high up in the stands took a second to register what they had just witnessed. The Portuguese side had gone 1-0 up in the 11th minute when William Gomes tapped home a cross from Gabri Veiga, to complete a flowing move down the left side of the pitch.

But then came a short period that turned the evening for Fernandes. The 20-year-old found himself under moderate pressure in the right-back position and so turned to sweep the ball back towards his goalkeeper…

The only problem was that he did so without bothering to look where Diogo Costa was standing.

And it left his ‘keeper with little option as the ball sped past him.

The Forest players enjoyed the moment, as did the travelling supporters who were some distance from the action. But the 20-year-old Porto academy product Fernandes understandably looked as though he wanted the ground to swallow him up.

Fernandes scored his first and only goal for Porto in a 3-0 win over Gil Vicente in January. He will not appreciate the manner in which he added an own goal to that tally.

The night then got worse for the player, who was making his 48th first-team appearance for the side.

Within three minutes of his own goal, Fernandes found himself needing treatment on the far side of the pitch where the Forest supporters were stationed.

The defender then capped an unfortunate period by having to make the long walk around the pitch as he was eventually substituted in the 19th minute.

It was a painful few minutes for the young player, who is very highly regarded at Porto — and by his country, whom he has represented at most age groups up until the age of under-21. It is the sort of six-minute spell he will hope to never experience again.
