IPL 2026, MI vs RCB 20th Match Match Preview – Wounded by Sooryavanshi, MI and RCB look to bounce back

Big picture

In the space of three days, both Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) went to Guwahati and got Sooryavanshied. With the wounds of those bruising defeats to Rajasthan Royals (RR) still fresh, MI and RCB meet on Sunday night at the Wankhede Stadium, hoping to win and hoping for a bit of normalcy.

MI have made a typically slow start to the season and have one win from three games, while RCB had won two before they ran into RR. It’s early days yet, but some themes could be emerging already.

For RCB, that one defeat seemed to be just that – one defeat. That they got past 200 against RR despite being six down in the 11th over showed their depth of resources, and if their bowlers took a pounding, the fact that Josh Hazlewood was back was in itself a source of positivity.

MI, however, seem to have problems. Their bowlers have struggled for both wickets – they’ve only taken ten in all in three games so far – and economy, and their attack seems over-dependent on Jasprit Bumrah. Their batting line-up is a list of familiar, formidable names, but the flip side is the sense it sometimes gives of being slightly behind the times. Where a number of other teams have unearthed stars for the future, MI seem to lack some of that new-age cutting edge.

But if you’ve watched enough of the IPL, you know how quickly statements like that can begin to look premature. For MI’s sake, they will want to prove it wrong as quickly as possible.

Key question

Team news

The injured Will Jacks is yet to arrive in India and join his MI team-mates. Mitchell Santner, however, seems fit to play. He had hurt his shoulder while diving in the match against Delhi Capitals and missed the game against RR, but trained with MI both on Friday and Saturday. He seems likely to slot back in for AM Ghazanfar.

Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Ryan Rickelton (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Naman Dhir, 7 Sherfane Rutherford, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Trent Boult/Corbin Bosch, 12 Jasprit Bumrah.

Josh Hazlewood struck in his first over on comebackBCCI

Abhinandan Singh, who has played all three of RCB’s games so far, had a rough night against RR, going for 54 in just three overs. If RCB want to pull him away from the firing line for a bit, they could bring in either Rasikh Salam or Mangesh Yadav, the Madhya Pradesh left-arm seamer they signed for INR 5.2 crore at the player auction.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (probable): 1 Phil Salt, 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Devdutt Padikkal, 4 Rajat Patidar (capt), 5 Tim David, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Romario Shepherd, 8 Krunal Pandya, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Abhinandan Singh/Mangesh Yadav, 11 Josh Hazlewood, 12 Suyash Sharma.

In the spotlight: Trent Boult and Tim David

After the hammering his team endured against RR, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene did not hide his feelings about his bowlers’ display with the new ball. “Yeah, I think we had some plans, but I don’t think, being honest, that we ever executed those plans the way we wanted,” he said. Trent Boult had a particularly rough night, getting hit for three sixes – two half-volleys on the pads and one long hop – in a 22-run over and not getting to bowl again. Boult, now 36, doesn’t play international cricket anymore and came into the IPL on the back of two months of no competitive cricket. Perhaps because of this lack of cricket, Boult hasn’t looked his sharpest at the start of this tournament, both in terms of pace and accuracy, and MI will hope he can find his rhythm quickly, particularly with Deepak Chahar, their other powerplay swing bowler, also looking off-colour.

In the last two seasons, Tim David is the quickest-scoring death-overs batter in the IPLCREIMAS

Since the start of the 2025 season, RCB have been the quickest-scoring death-overs (17-20) team in the IPL, going at 12.42 an over in this phase. That’s more than a run per over quicker than MI’s solidly mid-table 11.12. This could have something to do with the fact that Tim David moved from MI to RCB ahead of IPL 2025. In these last two seasons, David is the quickest-scoring death-overs batter in the IPL (minimum 40 balls faced), with a strike rate of 236.58 in this phase. Do MI regret letting go of him? David will want to make sure they do by the end of Sunday night.

Stats and trivia

  • If both play on Sunday, it will be the 35th IPL meeting of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Who has done better in these head-to-heads so far? There really isn’t much in it. Kohli is nine runs away from 1000 runs in these games, with an average of 35.39, a strike rate of 133.19, and eight fifties. Rohit, meanwhile, has 848 runs at 27.35 and 136.99, with seven fifties.
  • Eight batters have scored at least 50 runs in IPL 2026 at a 200-plus strike rate. Three are RCB players – Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal and Tim David. MI don’t have anyone on that list.
  • Four of MI’s bowlers – Shardul Thakur, Ghazanfar, Mayank Markande and Boult – have 12-plus economy rates after playing two or more games this season.
  • MI have an overall 21-14 head-to-head record against RCB, but the last five games have been neck and neck, with RCB winning three and MI two.

Pitch and conditions

The Wankhede is an out-and-out bowl-first venue in night games, with dew almost always playing a role during run chases. Recent results at Pitch No. 8 – on which Sunday’s game is set to be played – paint a balanced picture, with the chasing team winning four and losing three of the last seven IPL games there, but run rates tell a different story, with teams going at 10.10 in the second innings of those matches compared to 9.58 in the first. Spin has been more economical than pace in these seven games, as overall economy rates of 8.58 and 10.13 would suggest, though one must bear in mind that fast bowlers tend to take on the bulk of the high-scoring powerplay and death overs.

A warm night is forecast in Mumbai, with temperatures dipping into the high 20s (Celsius) from an afternoon high of 33 degrees.
