LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A tentative agreement has been reached between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the teachers union ahead of a potential strike that could shut down schools.
The district’s two-year contract agreement with United Teachers Los Angeles was announced Sunday. It increases salary scales for union members by 11.65% and increases the beginning teacher salary $77,000 a year.
An LAUSD strike could be just days away, not just by teachers but principals, administrators and district employees as well.
“The flexing of our collective power forced LAUSD to direct significant funding into critical priorities identified by UTLA members in the Win Our Future contract demands,” UTLA officials said in a statement posted to Instagram.
However, the deal does not completely rule out the possibility of a strike from other educators and school workers.
Mediation talks continue between district officials and SEIU Local 99, which represents about 30,000 school employees such as custodians, bus drivers and other workers.
The Associated Administrators of L.A., which represents school principals and management, is threatening to walk as well.
LAUSD officials say they will continue to meet and negotiate over the weekend in hopes of keeping schools open come deadline day – which is set for Tuesday, April 14.
