Jason Day Met His Wife Ellie at an Irish Pub in Ohio

As Jason Day looks to capture his first green jacket at the Masters, his wife Ellie Day (née Harvey) will be supporting him at Augusta National Golf Club.

The two met in 2005 in Ohio when Jason, an Australian golfer, fell for Ellie, who was working as a hostess at a pub. Jason recalled to Qantas Magazine, “I was 17 and she was 19. She was a waitress at an Irish pub, Mavis Winkle’s, in Twinsburg, Ohio. I was too shy to talk to her but I thought she was gorgeous. I found out that [my coach and caddie] Colin [Swatton] had her number and I texted her: ‘This is Jason Day from Australia. Do you remember me?’ She said yes and we started talking. When I went back in 2007, she watched me play. I won. She had no idea what golf was.”

Their first date happened at Applebee’s in Columbus, Ohio, two years after they met. Jason said, “Afterwards, all I wanted to do was play golf and see Ellie. I knew I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life. Your personal life can get hit by the sacrifices you make to be a better player. To have a person who’s so solid, who loves me as much as anyone could, means everything.”

Here, what to know about Jason Day’s wife Ellie:

She graduated from Lucas High School in 2004, where she played softball and volleyball. “It’s so funny, because Ellie really is a country girl at heart,” her mom, Lucy Knapp, told Mansfield News Journal. “I always knew she’d marry someone famous, but I thought it would be a country singer. I always pictured her with Brad Paisley, but Jason is country of sorts. He likes his cowboy boots.”

She didn’t know anything about golf before meeting Jason.

“I caught on quickly,” Ellie said. “At first I was such an airhead, I didn’t know anything. I learned a ton. Random people will ask how Jason’s doing and I know enough what’s going on, or if his reaction is good or bad. But I don’t want to know what club, specifically, he’s using. I’ll never want to ask, ‘Why’d you do that? Why’d you use that club?’”

Ellie is a mom of five.

Jason and Ellie have five children: Dash (b. July 2012), Lucy (b. November 2015), Arrow (b. November 2018), Oz (b. June 2021) and Winnie (b. September 2023).

The family is frequently spotted at Jason’s tournaments.

“I just wanted to do something. I wanted to see the change actually happening. You have to start somewhere and I think the best place you can start is at home,” Ellie said. “People want to be involved. They want to be a part of something. They actually can see what they’re giving to and how it matters … I think you can’t make big change unless you start somewhere, and I think the ripple effects of that go out now.”

The organization, the website notes, “partners with local nonprofit organizations that work to meet basic needs, give hope, and deliver high-quality programs and services with measurable, impactful results, ensuring that every dollar raised goes back into the local community.”
