Audiences tuning into the most recent episode of Married At First Sight Australia were puzzled over what one bride might have uttered that sparked a heated argument spanning several days.

The latest series of this unconventional dating show from Australia has captivated fans with its generous helping of controversy. While the social experiment involves over a dozen complete strangers getting married the moment they first meet, not every union has flourished.

The remaining couples have now moved on to the retreat phase of the experiment, with several sharing significant developments with the group. Among these revelations, Filip has declared his love for Stella, while Joel and Juliette appear to have had a complete transformation following their explosive disagreement.

Additionally, Rachel and Steve disclosed that although they haven’t been intimate yet, they have made strides in their physical connection.

During their initial evening at the retreat, Bec stood up to deliver a toast acknowledging various milestones and made a quip regarding Rachel and Steve with a comment deemed so inappropriate that Channel 4 censored it entirely. When Sam urged her to apologise for her choice of words, Bec insisted it was merely in jest, reports OK!.

So what exactly did Bec say at the retreat? In her brief address, she remarked: “We’ve had I love yous. We’ve had a couple who I thought could not come back from the brink of hell, and we’ve had f****r b***s!”

Rachel, however, was clearly unhappy about what she considers meaningful progress in her marriage being reduced to a punchline. Bec hit back, accusing Rachel of being “very quick to turn” and suggesting she should ‘grow a personality’ rather than take offence.

Rachel subsequently leaves, prompting Bec to shout: “Who’s husband has helped him get there? Mine! My husband got on the beers with him! Look at her, going nuts. She needs to calm down.”

Bec shows no remorse the following morning, accusing Rachel of attention-seeking by wandering around the retreat visibly distressed. She also tells several fellow participants that she intends to have her remarks printed on merchandise, including a t-shirt.

Even Gia and Julliette, no strangers to dramatic confrontations themselves, weigh in on how thoughtless Bec’s conduct has been. Meanwhile, during a fireside gathering amongst the men, Steve is pressed on whether he found the ‘joke’ amusing and whether his wife had overreacted.

Though he sidesteps a direct response, he confides to camera that his personal view on the joke’s success is beside the point. He says: “It doesn’t matter what they think of it. She was upset. You gotta take that on board.”

Rachel says she felt humiliated, reduced to the punchline of a joke. Bec says she didn’t mean it that way. Rachel says it wasn’t the joke that hurt – it was the behaviour that followed. A preview of the forthcoming episode suggests Bec’s remarks look set to continue stoking tensions between the couples. A number of viewers were baffled by Channel 4’s choice to cut Bec’s speech from the broadcast. One viewer wrote: “Why have they edited out the phrase?”

Married At First Sight Australia continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on E4.
