Royal Mail disruptions are continuing as additional postcode areas face delayed deliveries. The postal service has said that addresses throughout the UK will experience late mail today, including parts of Merseyside.

As of Wednesday, April 15, 34 postcode areas are affected. Royal Mail said: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week.

“In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors. In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers.

“We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.”

It added: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.” Throughout the past 24 hours, Royal Mail’s air network has ran according to schedule, reports the Mirror.

However, road transport has experienced setbacks. A vehicle departing from the London Central Mail Centre reached the Midlands Hub behind schedule.

This means mail scheduled for delivery today across certain areas of the Midlands and northern England may arrive later than planned.

Royal Mail has faced backlash regarding late deliveries, while its owner faced questions from MPs. Daniel Kretinsky previously told MPs: “Of course I am deeply sorry for any letters that arrive late.”

Addressing the Commons Business select committee, Mr Kretinsky added: “It is not perfect, but it is not catastrophic.”

This month has seen the cost of postal stamps increase, with First Class stamps now priced at £1.80 and Second Class at 91p. By comparison, a First Class stamp cost just 76p in 2020.

Richard Travers, Royal Mail’s managing director of letters, said: “We always consider price changes very carefully, balancing affordability with the rising cost of delivering mail.

“On average, UK adults now spend just £6.50 each year on stamps and there are 70% fewer letters sent than 20 years ago.”

Mr Travers added: “In the meantime, the number of addresses we deliver to has increased by four million to 32 million addresses across the UK.”
