Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu spoke about Cruise’s transformation at the screening, admitting, “Watching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that.”
Iñárritu, 62, further noted that while he knew Crusie was fearless in terms of stunts, “embodying this character, this is another kind of fearless… this role could be his most challenging, hire-wire act.”
The Mission: Impossible star was also in attendance at CinemaCon, telling the room, “The movie is wild, it’s funny and I can’t wait for you all to see it,” per the outlet. Cruise also explained that this “kind of movie is why I wanted to make movies.”

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Iñárritu spoke a bit about the film and gushed about working with Cruise.
“All I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions,” he said per The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s insane. It’s scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me.”
“And Tom makes me laugh every single day,” Iñárritu added. “He has this total commitment, this total madness.”
Digger is set to hit theaters on October 2.
