Multi-vehicle pileup shuts down northbound Deerfoot Trail at Glenmore

A stretch of Deerfoot Trail in southeast Calgary was shut down temporarily on Wednesday night after a series of collisions during a spring snowstorm.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Deerfoot between Glenmore Trail and the Calf Robe Bridge around 8:55 p.m. for reports of multiple vehicles involved in crashes.

Calgary police say as many as a dozen vehicles were involved in more than one collision in that area.

Several people suffered minor injuries, according to police. No serious injuries have been reported.

The northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail were closed at Glenmore Trail, with all traffic being diverted onto eastbound and westbound Glenmore.

The road reopened around 11 p.m.

Calgary police say the southbound lanes of the highway were also shut down at Heritage Meadows Way SE due to several collisions between Southland and Heritage Drive.

That stretch of road reopened around 2:15 a.m.

The collisions come as Calgary is under a snowfall warning with Environment Canada warning of hazardous travel conditions.
