Deepak Chahar opened the bowling for Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings on Thursday, April 16, but conceded 21 runs in the first over. He was struck for two fours by Prabhsimran Singh, and one six and one four by Priyansh Arya.

By conceding 21 runs in the opening over of PBKS’ innings during their 196-run chase at Wankhede Stadium, Chahar registered an unwanted IPL record. He became the first bowler in the world to concede 20 or more runs in the first over of an IPL innings on multiple occasions. Earlier this season, he had also given away 22 runs in the first over against Rajasthan Royals, when Yashasvi Jaiswal scored all 22 runs off him in a match played on April 7, 2026, in Guwahati.

The record for conceding the most runs in the first over of an IPL match is held by Nitish Rana, who was taken for 26 runs by Jaiswal during an RR vs KKR clash in IPL 2023. In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, David Payne of Sunrisers Hyderabad also conceded 25 runs in the first over against Kolkata Knight Riders.
