‘Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu’ Debuts New Trailer, First 17 Minutes

Grogu is ready for the big screen.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, a spinoff film of Disney+’s The Mandalorian TV show, is coming to theaters and flew into CinemaCon on Thursday for a sneak peak.
Filmmaker Jon Favreau hit the stage at the Las Vegas event. “Star Wars made me fall in love with movies,” he told the crowd. “I saw it for the first time with my dad.” He added of the movie’s team, “I hope that our enjoyment and excitement and love of Star Wars translates to fans seeing it for the first time.”
He noted his pride in bringing Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, to the big screen: “We can’t wait to introduce him to a brand new audience.”
After screening the new trailer, which can be seen below, Favreau explained that he wished he could show more — and then he did just that, as the presentation screened the first 17 minutes of the film.
The Mandalorian & Grogu opens with a tense meeting among Empire leadership, ending with one member getting killed. Soon, Pascal makes his presence known, dispatching plenty of Empire guards along the way. He scoops up Grogu, chiding him, “What are you waiting for? Hop on.” They then make their way down the side of a snowy mountain in a high-speed chase.
“He’s breaching the hatch,” a member of the Empire exclaims about the Mandalorian. Grogu adorably taps Pascal’s helmet amid a tense battle moment, and later the little guy has other cute moments like sneezing and frolicking down a flight of stairs.
“Things went a little sideways,” Pascal announces at one point.
When he meets up with Sigourney Weaver‘s Colonel Ward, she has some constructive criticism. “Messy, very messy,” Weaver scolds Pascal. “This isn’t about revenge. It’s about preventing another war and protecting everything that the rebellion fought for.”
She then sends Pascal off to seek out Rotta the Hut. After Pascal expresses hesitance, she replies, “You don’t want the job, I got nothing for you.”
Pascal’s Mandalorian, also known as Din Djarin, leads the project, which marks the first Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker and is directed by the Disney+ series The Mandalorian creator Favreau. The director also wrote the story with Dave Filoni; Filoni, a George Lucas protégé, was upped to oversee the creative direction of Lucasfilm as president and chief creative officer earlier this year, following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure.
The new story picks up as the evil Empire has fallen but Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they enlist the help of Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.
Weaver and Jeremy Allen White also star in the film, which features music composed by Ludwig Göransson and hits theaters on May 22. Martin Scorsese is involved in the project, appearing in the trailer as an Ardennian (a four-armed, fur-covered species) who is running a store of some kind and tries to shut down a conversation with Mando, who is seeking information about one of the Hutts.
