Person and dog killed after vehicle t-boned by speeding SUV in West Philadelphia

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — One person and a dog were killed after the vehicle they were in was t-boned by a speeding SUV early Friday morning in West Philadelphia.

Police say the crash happened after the driver of a Dodge Durango ran a red light at the intersection of South 48th and Walnut streets around 4 a.m.

After being struck, the victim’s Chevy Malibu slammed into four parked vehicles on 48th Street. One of those vehicles ended up landing on the sidewalk against a home.

Police say a 25-year-old male driver, a 23-year-old male passenger and a 22-year-old passenger were inside the Durango at the time of the crash. All three were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with minor injuries.

“I just heard the collision. It sounded like boom, boom, boom, boom. I knew it was about five or six cars right from the rip,” said Avery Kirk from West Philadelphia.

Police had to have the Malibu towed to the medical examiner’s office because the car was so badly wrecked that responding police could not get inside.

The driver of the Malibu has not yet been identified.

Chopper 6 was over the scene where you can see the heavily damaged Durango in the middle of the street and debris scattered all across the roadway.

Neighbors who live nearby were angry this happened. They say some drivers treat Walnut Street like a race track and they’ve been asking for speed cameras for years.

“We need some speed cameras on this block to regulate this speed because cars come through here 60, 70, sometimes 80, 90 mph,” said Kirk. “This is a 30 mph. If that stuff has been effective on the Boulevard and on Broad Street. That’s the kind of help we need because it’s not safe.”

Police say the Dodge Durango has not been reported stolen at this time.

No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
