Driver who left scene of crash dies after being hit by lorry on A1(M) | ITV News

A van driver who walked away from his vehicle following a crash died 20 minutes later after being hit by a lorry on a motorway.

The 60-year-old, from Leeds, was in a Toyota Proace City van that was involved in a collision with a white Renault Captur on Valley Road in Darrington, West Yorkshire, at 7.16am on Thursday.

West Yorkshire Police said he “left the area on foot” and was seen at about 7.36am walking on the hard shoulder of the A1(M).

A short time later he was hit by a lorry near the Ferrybridge junction. He died at the scene.

The motorway was closed for much of the day for investigations.

Det Insp Daniel Ridgway said: “This is a tragic incident in which a man has lost his life. His family are aware and are being offered specialist support.

“We have already spoken to a number of witnesses, but I would urge anyone else who has any information that could assist us in our enquiries to please get in contact.”

The driver of the Renault Captur involved in the initial collision was taken to hospital for checks.
