‘CAPS AT THE SUMMIT: Back at the top. Vancouver Whitecaps FC earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Eastern Conference challengers New York City FC last weekend to cement their spot at the top of the summit in MLS. Mathías Laborda opened the scoring late in the first half with his 11th career goal for the club, while Brian White scored his sixth goal in seven MLS matches this season to secure the three points. White’s finish also marked the club’s 700th MLS regular season goal. Ecuadorian U22 Initiative signing Bruno Caicedo earned the assist on the goal, tallying his first goal contribution for the club. With the win, the ‘Caps sit first in the league entering Matchday 8 action thanks to their club-record 6W-1L-0D start to the season (18 points) and their +15 goal differential.
TEAM CHARGE: It’s been a full team effort from the ‘Caps to begin the 2026 season, with 14 different players tallying either a goal or an assist across all competitions. Leading the way is United States international Sebastian Berhalter, who has recorded nine goal contributions (four goals, five assists) in 11 matches. The 24-year-old, who is one away from reaching 50 goal contributions for Whitecaps FC, is tied for second in MLS for goal contributions with eight and is second in expected assists with 2.80. Additionally, Brian White is second in the league in goals with six and sits first in expected goals with 7.00, while Andrés Cubas is third in tackles per 90 with 5.40. The ‘Caps have not conceded a goal with Cubas on the field this season through 521 minutes across all competitions. Berhalter, White, and Cubas are all FIFA World Cup 2026™ hopefuls with their respective national teams.
HOME FORTRESS: Next on the docket for the Blue and White is their fourth of five consecutive home matches at BC Place, this time facing off against Western Conference opponents Sporting Kansas City. Dating back to April 2022, the ‘Caps hold a 6W-1L-1D record over Sporting, which includes a 3-0 victory in their previous meeting at BC Place last July and a 2-0 road win back in September. Vancouver will be aiming to carry that form into Friday’s clash and continue building on their strong home record under head coach Jesper Sørensen. Since joining the club, the Dane has powered the ‘Caps to a 21W-5L-6D record at BC Place across all competitions. Following Friday’s match, the ‘Caps will have one more home match ahead of the World Cup break, scheduled for Saturday, April 25 against Western Conference side Colorado Rapids.
COLIN MILLER’S KEYS TO THE MATCH
- Stay focused
Sporting’s front three of Dejan Joveljić, Calvin Harris, and Shapi Suleymanov can be very dangerous.
We have to stay focused defensively.
Don’t give them a sniff.
- Keep our momentum
No complacency.
SKC are last in the West with the most goals against.
We need to be ruthless and disciplined, keep our momentum going.
- Young fullbacks
Édier Ocampo and Tate Johnson are playing really well and are contributing to the team as young fullbacks.
Both are doing well going forward.
The future of the club looks very good at those positions.
Catch Asa Rehman and Colin Miller on the 730 CKNW radio call this Saturday, with the pre-match show kicking off at 7 p.m. PT.
