A “magnificent” medieval Scottish castle could be yours – if you happen to have £1 million to spare. Law Castle is a 15th-century medieval tower house in West Kilbride, North Ayrshire, and is currently available through property agents Savills.
The remarkable property was originally commissioned in 1467 as a wedding gift to Princess Mary Stuart, daughter of King James II of Scotland, a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce. It is brimming with extraordinary features, including one which a social media user claimed “changes everything”.
The listing on Rightmove highlights the dungeon dining room, stone walls, timber beams, fireplaces, and six bedrooms. Prospective buyers can even access the roof, offering stunning views across the Ayrshire countryside. And it’s what’s inside one of the bedrooms which left the Reddit user astounded.
They shared a link to the listing on the social media platform with the caption: “Drawbridge bed. This changes everything.”
Indeed, an image inside one of the bedrooms reveals a double bed, with chains connecting the top of the wooden wall to the foot of the bed, creating a drawbridge effect. It’s unclear whether the bed can actually be hoisted up to the wall like an authentic drawbridge, reports the Daily Record.
The listing on Rightmove describes the property as “a magnificent 15th century castle restored to immaculate standards”. It details how it fell into disrepair in the 19th century, before a restoration project commenced at the end of the 20th century. This was completed in 2005.
The listing states: “Today, Law Castle stands as a testament to Scotland’s architectural resilience and royal heritage, it positively reeks of the romance, pride and passion of Scotland’s history. The restoration has preserved its authentic period features – including the spiral stone staircase, vaulted chambers, and caphouse lookout – while seamlessly integrating modern comforts.
“The result is a residence of exceptional character, historical gravitas and, if you imagine The Bruce, Knights Templar and full on Da Vinci Code you will not be far wrong! This is an extremely rare opportunity to own, ‘feel’, and be a part of an incredibly authentic piece of Scotland’s noble past.”
It further notes: “The property is well suited for use as a private residence, holiday retreat, or investment opportunity in Scotland’s thriving heritage tourism sector. The local area is welcoming and well-connected with a strong sense of community.”
Reactions from Reddit users were varied. One commented: “That’s the stupidest, most ridiculous house I’ve ever seen. I love it.”
Another recalled fond personal memories of the castle, saying: “My family live close to this, growing up it was hilarious all the local kids had so many crazy urban myths about who lives there.
“Wonderful views of Arran (it was originally built for the woman who married the Earl of Arran in the 15th century), but I expect it’s a nightmare to heat and doesn’t get much natural light.”
One person commented: “I would have this as my winter residence, all the fires lit all day in the winter but I think it would be a bit dark in the summer.”
While another added: “This is literally the best house I’ve ever seen. I want it so bad.”
