Maryland men’s basketball adds combo guard DJ Wagner from transfer portal

Maryland men’s basketball may have found its playmaker at the point. Senior combo guard DJ Wagner has committed to the Terps, InsideMDSports first reported Saturday.
The 6-foot-4 former Arkansas Razorback had to contend with two young stars eating minutes at his position last year in Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas. Wagner started 19 of 35 games, averaging 7.4 points and 2.4 assists per game in a season that was a statistical regression from his previous two seasons.
The incoming Terp began his collegiate career in Kentucky, where he earned all-SEC freshman team honors after averaging 9.9 points and 3.3 assists per game, before following head coach John Calipari to Arkansas.
Wagner took off during his first year in Arkansas, earning a starting role and taking on full-time ball handling duties midway through the season following an injury to another freshman star, Boogie Fland. The senior averaged 12.2 points and 4.6 assists per game during 18 games as a true point guard.
His notable on-court stamina is something Williams will likely look to exploit — Wagner averaged more than 34.5 minutes per game while starting all of 36 Arkansas’ games in that sophomore season.
In 2025-26, that usage fell to 23.6 minutes per game, the lowest mark of his career. Wagner’s 3-point percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio improved sharply, though, signalling that the former five-star recruit has more to prove in his final collegiate season.
