Ontario autoworker won’t quit his job after $1M Encore lottery win — instead, he has one tasty meal in mind

Delroy Shand isn’t planning a dramatic life change after his $1 million lottery win — just a good meal and a steady path forward. The Brampton, Ont., resident matched all seven Encore numbers during the Feb. 4, 2026 Lotto 6/49 draw, securing the seven-figure prize. But despite the windfall, the 60-year-old says he intends to keep showing up to the job he’s held in the automotive industry.
“I don’t want to quit work. I love my job,” Shand said while claiming his prize at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.
“I don’t want to spend my win on anything lavish either. I just want to focus on my family and my retirement. And I think I need a good steak!”’
Shand has been playing the lottery since immigrating to Canada in 1990, and says adding Encore has always been part of his routine — a small habit that ultimately paid off in a big way.
“I always say yes to Encore, and this time it made me $1 million richer!” he said.
When he shared the news, his family was overjoyed, though the celebration has remained relatively private.
“We’ve kept it quiet,” Shand said.
Still, the significance of the moment hasn’t been lost on him. Reflecting on the day he picked up his cheque, Shand described it as emotional.
“It feels fantastic! Today is a touching day for me.”
While he’s considering buying a new home, Shand says his priorities are simple: staying grounded, continuing to work, and taking care of his family as he plans for retirement.
Encore is an add-on feature available with most lottery games in Ontario. For an extra $1, players receive a seven-digit number and can win prizes by matching those numbers in exact or partial order. The game offers multiple ways to win, including a $1 million top prize for matching all seven numbers in the correct sequence, with two draws held daily.
