Manchester City took back control of the Premier League title race with a hard-earned victory over leaders Arsenal in an entertaining and action-filled game at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now three points off top spot, but have a game in hand on their rivals, meaning the race could now come down to goal difference.

It was a game of seismic importance, and had promised so much in the build-up, billed as the biggest game the Premier League had seen in years, and described by City manager Guardiola as a “final”. The pressure of the occasion alongside the fact that Arsenal might have been happy to play for a point meant that this could have been a cagey affair. However, despite the stakes being so high, it could barely have been more entertaining.

Much of that was down to how Mikel Arteta set his team up: to press high up the pitch at every opportunity. They did so from the off, and they managed to peg City back in their own half in the game’s early stages. 56.2% of the opening 15 minutes of the game were played in City’s defensive third of the pitch. Any notion that Arsenal would be playing for a draw was swiftly and categorically dispelled.

City had no choice but to go for it themselves, needing a win to keep the title race in their hands, and whenever they did manage to get out of their half, they threw men forward. And on one of the very first of those occasions, Rayan Cherki produced a moment of magic to put them in front.

He received the ball on the edge of the area, danced past two Arsenal players and fired through the legs of another into the far corner of the net. The goal made him the first Premier League player to reach double figures for both goals and assists in all competitions this season, doing so in his first campaign in England.

However, Arsenal responded in the perfect manner, with their high press paying dividends almost immediately, even if their equaliser was more than a little fortunate.

David Raya launched a ball out of play deep in City territory straight from kick-off, and Matheus Nunes threw the throw-in back to Gianluigi Donarumma. The Italian hesitated on the ball and Kai Havertz, fielded up front for Arsenal in place of Viktor Gyökeres, pounced, charging down the goalkeeper’s attempted clearance, and the ball bounced into the empty net.

Just 107 seconds separated the two goals. Arsenal’s gameplan was clear from the outset, and Arteta’s bold approach had been rewarded. They went in level at the break, which they would have most certainly been content with.

However, they would also have seen what City did at Stamford Bridge last week after a below-par first half, when they blew Chelsea away with three goals in quick succession at the start of the second period. And predictably, the home side came flying out the blocks this time, too.

Erling Haaland struck the post at a corner, and Antoine Semenyo wasted what might have been a huge chance as he failed to bring a long ball under control when he raced through on goal.

City were having all of the ball and ramping up the pressure. Arsenal had gone more than 40 minutes without a shot since their 18th-minute goal and the game was in danger of getting away from them.

They did well, therefore, to create two huge chances on a couple of rare forays forward. First, they raced upfield on the counter and Martin Ødegaard slipped Havertz in, only to be denied by Donnarumma from close range. Moments later, Eberechi Eze had the City goalkeeper beaten with a shot from the edge of the box, but it cannoned back off the inside of the post, across the face of goal and away. Those were to prove crucial misses.

It felt for a moment like Arsenal were going to stem the tide of City’s momentum, but the hosts reasserted their superiority, and soon after, Erling Haaland, so often Arsenal’s tormentor over the years, struck to put City back in front. Jérémy Doku came forward down the left and found Nico O’Reilly, who played a ball across goal, which eventually found its way to the Norwegian, who made no mistake from eight yards out.

Haaland has now scored six goals in eight Premier League games against Arsenal. Only Sergio Agüero (8 in 15 games) and Kevin De Bruyne (8 in 16 games) have scored more for either side in Premier League matches between these teams.

Arsenal responded again but were denied by the woodwork once when Gabriel’s header at a set-piece came back off the post via a deflection off O’Reilly. That made this the first game in the Premier League this season in which both teams have hit the frame of the goal at least twice.

With the clock ticking down and control of the title race slipping out of their hands, Arsenal needed a moment, and there was to be one last, huge chance deep in second-half stoppage time. It fell to Havertz, but the German planted a free header from right in front of goal just over the crossbar. The Arsenal players fell to their knees. That was the one last chance they’d get.

City saw out the remainder of the game, and held on to close the gap at the top of the table to three points. The title race is in their hands once again. This win feels very significant indeed.
