‘Unfathomable sadness’: Driver charged with DWI, family mourns boy killed in Durham e-bike crash :: WRAL.com

The 26-year-old grandson of Duke basketball legend Mike Krzyzewski is accused of hitting a 15-year-old bicyclist over the weekend. The boy later died.
Joseph Savarino faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired after the crash just before 9 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane in Durham.
Durham police said Savarino was driving a Ford Explorer north on Cole Mill Road when he hit the teenage boy on an electronic bicycle. Police said the boy died at the scene.
Public records show Savarino had a 0.11 blood alcohol content in his breathalyzer test conducted around 12:45 a.m. Sunday. Records show Savarino admitted to authorities that he drank earlier in the night.
Authorities were holding Savarino at the Durham County Detention Center on a $100,000 secured bond. He has since posted bond, according to public records.
A judge also issued an order to revoke Savarino’s license.
Joseph Savarino is charged with driving while impaired.
Savarino’s brother, Michael Savarino, was charged in 2022 with DWI and sentenced to 12 months of probation.
Both Joseph and Michael Savarino are sons of Krzyzewski’s daughter, Debbie. Michael Savarino was a walk-on for the Duke basketball team from 2020-2022 and played for his grandfather in 13 games.
Mother mourns loss of son killed in e-bike crash
The 15-year-old boy’s mother identified her son, Jack O’Shea, as the victim in a Facebook post on Sunday night.
“It is with unfathomable sadness that [my husband] and I share that our perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome baby boy, Jack, passed away yesterday, April 18th, at just 15 years old,” Allison O’Shea wrote of her late son. “We are finding comfort in what was his last perfect day.
“He woke up and asked to go to confession at Immaculate Conception Church. He then played two baseball games with his high school team, where he did what he always did — showed up fully and excelled at first base. Later, he went on his usual afternoon bike ride with friends.”
Jack O’Shea played on the Cardinal Gibbons’ freshman baseball team. The school held a mass on Monday after school in his honor.
Allison O’Shea said the family would soon share the details of Jack O’Shea’s funeral services.
“Please keep our family in your prayers,” Allison O’Shea wrote.
