A lovable dog was sent back to kennels just 12 days after finally being rehomed – and the devastating reason has left volunteers heartbroken. Ralph, now 11, initially arrived at Oakwood Dog Rescue in 2021 as a terrified six year old with a troubled history, and has remained there longer than any other dog.
Prior to reaching the UK, Ralph had been living in shelters across Romania – where existence for stray dogs can be exceptionally brutal. With scarce food, minimal shelter and harsh surroundings, numerous dogs are left distressed and frightened, merely attempting to survive. Nevertheless, Ralph was among the fortunate ones who was transported over to begin a fresh life.
But, regrettably, matters didn’t work out as hoped. Shortly following his arrival, he was rehomed – only to be brought back just 12 days later due to his anxious behaviour.
Since that time, volunteers have dedicated years to working to help him emerge from his shell and develop trust once more.
Five years later, he’s still waiting.
Characterised as a “lovable, cheeky gentleman”, Ralph has become a beloved favourite amongst volunteers and helpers, who have witnessed him gradually develop in confidence over the years. And lately, they achieved a significant milestone.

Due to his background, Ralph had always been too frightened to walk on a lead – something numerous dogs master without difficulty.
However, after testing a different harness, he eventually took his very first walk and, “absolutely loved it”. To mark his 11th birthday, volunteers at the Hull rescue centre also arranged a special outing to a secure dog field, where he could run about freely, discover fresh scents, and even share tea and biscuits with the people who look after him most.
While he has formed a few canine friendships during his stay at the kennels, Ralph would be most suitable for a household without other animals, as he enjoys having his humans entirely to himself.
Workers say all he requires now is somebody prepared to offer him the time, patience and affection he needs.
Following years of being passed over, they’re hoping his journey might finally help him secure the permanent home he’s been longing for.
Responding to Ralph’s rehoming post, one Facebook user commented: “He’s beautiful, can’t believe he’s not been rehomed, bless him.”
Another user added: “This is so sad what a lovely boy home now.” A third user said: “He’s gorgeous. Hope he finds his people soon.”
