PREVIEW | Hereford FC vs Marine AFC

Words: Will Morris

Hereford FC entertain Marine AFC at the MandM Edgar Street Stadium on Tuesday night, in their penultimate match of the campaign.

STATE OF PLAY

The Bulls will be seeking a similar performance to Saturday’s triumph over Radcliffe, as they bid to escape the relegation zone for the first time since early December.

First-half strikes from George Munday and Harry Tustin proved enough to secure a vital three points going into the final two encounters of the season. Despite Rio Clegg’s lifeline for the Boro moments before the interval, Aaron Downes’ side held on to their 3-1 advantage, taking their overall points tally to 48 from 44 outings.

Victory over Marine on Tuesday would put the Bulls level on points with Curzon Ashton and King’s Lynn Town ahead of their final fixture, at home to Peterborough Sports.

Hereford’s form has been steady over the last six games, posting the 11th best record in the division, but Aaron Downes knows his side need maximum points to ensure safety, reiterating the importance of producing a similar showing on Tuesday.

“I’m really pleased with them, don’t get me wrong, but at the same time we have to shift our focus,” stressed the Bulls’ boss after Saturday’s win. “We have to move on because it’s a quick turnaround. So I’ll be challenging them again to replicate what we’ve done today against different opposition and a different style of play.

“They stood up to the challenge [against Radcliffe] and now I’m going to ask them, ‘Have they got that again?’ That’s my challenge to them. And I’ve got to do my bit as well, which I will, but I’m going to have to put them under a little bit more pressure.”

THE OPPOSITION

Marine have enjoyed a respectable campaign, currently sitting 12th on 61 points, but have fallen short in recent weeks regarding their potential play-off push. They are now nine points before behind seventh-placed Buxton with two games to play, so the Mariners will be looking to end their season on a high note and post a top-half finish.

Since the Bulls triumphed 1-0 at Rossett Park less than two weeks ago, the Merseysiders have accrued three points from a possible nine. An impressive victory at play-off-chasing Darlington was followed by consecutive defeats to Merthyr Town and most recently Alfreton Town, who prevailed 3-2 in Crosby on Saturday.

After Finlay Sinclair-Smith had opened the scoring for the Mariners, a Siyabonga Ligendza brace fired the Derbyshire club in front. George Newell thought he had grabbed a late equaliser, until Lewis Salmon popped up with a 95th-minute winner.

Despite scoring just 22 times on the road this term, the joint-second least in the division, Marine have won eight, drawn three and lost 10 away league games.

ONE TO WATCH: FINLAY SINCLAIR-SMITH

The 26-year-old former Blackpool and Bamber Bridge winger has 12 league goals and five assists to his name this season, finding the net five times his last eight outings.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

The Bulls are unbeaten in three clashes with the Mariners, victorious on two occasions. In this season’s reverse fixture, Mikey Lane bagged the only goal on his native Merseyside as Hereford secured a hard-fought 1-0 win. Marine have only travelled to the MandM Edgar Street Stadium once before, losing 4-0 courtesy of a first-minute Ryan Bartley goal, plus efforts from Jason Cowley, Andy Williams and Mark Derricott.
