Earthquakes continue to shake Lyon County

FERNLEY, Nev. (KOLO) – Fernley is once again experiencing some rumbling of the earth Sunday morning, according to a North Lyon Fire Facebook post.

“Several small earthquakes have been felt already today, originating from the same area southeast of town as last week’s earthquake,” the post said.

From 11:07 p.m., on Saturday, April 18, to 10:21 a.m. on Sunday, there have been about 90 earthquakes in Northern Nevada ranging from a magnitude .9 to a 4.5, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Emergency personnel are actively inspecting critical infrastructure and, at this time, there have been no significant reports of damage, according to an 11 a.m. Sunday Lyon County, Nev., Facebook post.

Following an earthquake, the fire department asked residents to check for injuries, provide first aid, and call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

Also, look for structural damage before moving around, and be cautious of falling debris, broken glass, and unstable surfaces.

If the structure is damaged, evacuate carefully and move to a safe, open area.

Firefighters ask residents to be alert to the smell of gas or hissing sounds. If a gas leak is suspected, leave immediately and notify authorities.

Residents should be alert to damaged electrical wiring or sparks, and extinguish small fires if it is safe to do so.

“As always, your North Lyon Firefighters stand ready,” the post said. “Stay safe, stay alert, and take care of each other.”
