Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta ‘considers shock free transfer’ and gets big boost over target

Arsenal have seen their Premier League title challenge suffer a major blow, but Mikel Arteta’s side must now pick themselves up and they are also looking towards transfers

Mikel Arteta is fighting to ensure Arsenal do not fail to win a trophy this season

Arsenal must focus on what lies ahead rather than dwelling on the past following last weekend’s setback against Manchester City.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 reverse at the Etihad on Sunday in a result that threw the title race completely open and now, following Pep Guardiola’s team beating Burnley 1-0 away on Wednesday, the Gunners have slipped down to second in the table having lost their nine-point lead in the space of just 11 days.

Mikel Arteta gave his squad a couple of days to rest and reset after the loss to their title rivals. However, their focus will now turn entirely to Saturday’s clash with Newcastle at the Emirates as they bid to return to winning form. Meanwhile, the club will have already started laying the groundwork for the summer transfer window. Here’s all the latest news from the Emirates Stadium.

Bernardo Silva claim

ESPN Brazil report Arsenal are considered a possible shock destination for Bernardo Silva, along with Barcelona, as he prepares to depart City on a free transfer.

The 31‐year‐old Portugal international has confirmed he will bring his nine‐year stint at the club to a close this summer.

A return to Portugal remains a possibility, but Silva is reportedly keen on joining a competitive team and continuing to play at the highest level.

Barcelona are thought to ‘stand out’ as the most suitable match for his current form, while Arsenal are said to be ‘monitoring the situation’.

However, a move to north London is seen as ‘more remote,’ largely due to the recent Premier League rivalry between the two clubs.

That being said, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have both made the transition in recent seasons.

Anthony Gordon boost

Newcastle United ace Anthony Gordon, who has been linked with a transfer to Arsenal recently, could be missing from Eddie Howe’s squad for Saturday’s match.

The Daily Mail suggests the 25-year-old winger is dealing with a hip problem and may miss what could have been a potential showcase at the Emirates.

Alongside Arsenal, both Bayern Munich and Liverpool also hold an interest in the England international, who could cost as much as £80m this summer.

Liverpool were eager to bring Gordon back to Merseyside after being offered the opportunity to sign him in 2024, when Newcastle were struggling to meet the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) deadline.

Gordon’s potential absence on Saturday should make Arsenal’s job much easier as they aim to bounce back from last weekend’s loss to City.
