MIAMI GARDENS — New Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan made the first major call of his initial NFL Draft by trading the 11th overall pick to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Dolphins moved down one slot, to No. 12, and in the process added Dallas’ 177th and 180th picks, both in Round 5.
Miami then used that No. 12 pick to select Alabama offensive lineman Kaydn Proctor.
The move isn’t a surprise. The Dolphins entered the draft with two first-round picks, Nos. 11 and 30, and 11 total picks, including seven among the top 100. Yet given all their needs in this rebuilding year, Sullivan made it clear all along he was open to making deals during the draft, especially if given the opportunity to trade down and stockpile even more selections.
“It’s more likely that we would move back and pick up picks than give up picks to go forward,” Sullivan said during his pre-draft news conference.
