PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster is one quarterback deeper after they took Penn State signal-caller Drew Allar in the third round (No. 76 overall) on Friday night. Even with the addition, there is more than enough room for Aaron Rodgers to settle back in if he so chooses.

First-year Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy was asked if Allar being thrown into the mix affects what the team is hoping to hear from Rodgers.

“No, not at all,” McCarthy said on Saturday night during a post-draft press conference at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “This is about developing the room, and trying to make the room as deep as we possibly can.”

Rodgers went 10-6 as the Steelers’ starter last season, passing for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions while helping steer them to the playoffs. Depending on what happens with Mason Rudolph, Allar and second-year Ohio State product Will Howard could serve as Rodgers’ backups if he returns to the Steel City, despite neither having ever taken a professional snap.

“These are all questions, answers, hypotheticals that really, it won’t change what I’ve already said,” McCarthy said. “I will coach the hell out of that room. I have a lot of confidence. I have history and experience that I will give everything I can to any quarterback in that room. We wanna grow the quarterback room. We don’t wanna just rely on one quarterback.”
