Highway 401 eastbound lanes closed in Pickering after ‘serious’ multi-vehicle crash

A fatal multi-vehicle crash has prompted the closure of eastbound lanes on Highway 401 in Pickering at Whites Road.

All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Pickering are closed Sunday morning following what police describe as a “serious” multi-vehicle collision.

In a post to social media, Ontario Provincial Police say the closure is in effect at Brock Road, where emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash just before 3 a.m. for reports of a collision involving a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, who police identified as a 38-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hours later, at approximately 4:25 a.m., officials say a second crash occurred involving a passenger vehicle and a police cruiser in the same area.

In that incident, police say two officers were transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

As a result, all eastbound collector and express lanes from Whites Road remain closed.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes, as they say the closure is “expected to be lengthy.”

The investigation is ongoing.
