First Alert Weather Day: Multiple rounds of storms, severe risk

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – We all know what this day means in Alabama. It’s been 15 years since the tornado outbreak of April 27, 2011. While storms are in the forecast overnight, we are not expecting anything like that event around here.

What we are tracking is multiple rounds of heavier rain and storms. A few storms could be severe with a risk for damaging wind gusts, hail, and frequent lightning. There is an isolated tornado threat that we’ll monitor by Tuesday afternoon, but this is not an outbreak-type setup.

ROUND #1 (LATE TONIGHT / EARLY TUESDAY): Severe weather is ongoing well north of Alabama this evening and a few storms have developed in Mississippi. Storms along the boundary from that activity will drift south overnight and begin impacting our area, mainly after midnight. A few storms could reach our northern counties before midnight, and we’ll be watching for a few to be strong or severe, though they should weaken as they move south through the early morning hours. Any leftover morning rain and storms should taper off by mid-morning.

ROUND #2 (TUESDAY EVENING / OVERNIGHT): Another larger complex of rain and storms is expected Tuesday evening. Tuesday is one of those days where afternoon sunshine isn’t necessarily a good thing, because instability will increase. Scattered storms should ramp up during the evening, and that will be the time to monitor closely for our next severe risk. There’s also a chance this evolves into a large complex of beneficial rain with rumbles continuing through the night.

ROUND #3 (WEDNESDAY): We should get a break returning by midday for most areas, with highs near 80. Another round of storms will develop farther south and could affect our far southern counties by late afternoon and evening. By Thursday, most of the wet weather shifts into south Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: Rain chances will return by late Friday into Saturday. The weekend won’t be a washout. We should see a nice break by Sunday, and don’t put away the jacket – another “May version” of Blackberry Winter could arrive with temperatures dropping into the low 40s Sunday morning.
