What to Know Before Brewers Face Diamondbacks

The Milwaukee Brewers will square off against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday to kick off a three-game series. Here is what you should know beforehand:

After coming off a commanding 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak, the Brewers now sit at 14-13 and are in last place in the highly-competitive National League Central Division that has no losing teams.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 15-12 and third in the National League West Division. Arizona is coming off a 12-7 win over the San Diego Padres, but it is 2-4 in its last six games.

Game 1 between the Brewers and the Diamondbacks will feature a pitching matchup of Milwaukee right-hander Chad Patrick and Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly.

Patrick is coming off a losing decision in an April 22 start against the Detroit Tigers that the Brewers lost, 5-2. In the loss, Patrick pitched four innings and struck out two batters while allowing six hits, four earned runs and a walk.

Kelly also struggled in his most recent start, which came against the Chicago White Sox in an 11-5 loss on April 21 where he was assessed the losing decision after allowing 10 hits, eight earned runs, three home runs and three walks over 4 ⅓ innings of work.

This season, Patrick is 1-1 over five games (three starts) with a 2.35 ERA through 23 innings pitched. Conversely, Kelly is 1-1 with a 9.31 ERA through two starts and 9 ⅔ innings of work.

As the Brewers struggle with injuries to key players such as Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, and Andrew Vaughn, they have received big contributions from Bice Turang, Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell.

Bauers has been a powerful presence for the Brewers at the plate, and he is tied with Gary Sánchez for first on the team with five home runs. Meanwhile, Mitchell leads the team with 19 RBIs.

For the Diamondbacks, a trio of IIdemaro Vargas, Nolan Arenado, and Ketel Marte have combined for 14 home runs, with Vargas leading the way for the club with six. Additionally, Corbin Carroll leads all qualified players on the roster in batting average (.287), on-base percentage (.400), slugging percentage (.552) and OPS (.952).
