Sheriff responds after social media post claims weekend takeover of Pensacola Beach

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — Law enforcement has been made aware of an event through social media declaring a takeover of Pensacola Beach this weekend.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is planning to increase its presence out on the beach as a precaution.
“The bottom line is you’re not going to take over Pensacola Beach,” Sheriff Chip Simmons said.
Sheriff Simmons says he finds the idea that someone would even think to do this “kind of crazy.”
After the event began making rounds on social media, the sheriff’s office found the organizer. After meeting him, he backed down on the invitation.
The sheriff’s office explained to him that this event, if held, would be unsanctioned. Therefore, the organizer would be responsible for the turnout.
“He’s no longer inviting people to go to the beach,” Simmons said.
Sheriff Simmons says the department has shut down other events, similar to this one, saying this is not something the department will ever tolerate.

“We were prepared and we will continue to be prepared for whatever takes place at the beach,” Simmons said.
