More popular restaurants close as situation worsens for Birmingham’s Pihakis Group

Three Birmingham eateries in the Pihakis Restaurant Group stable were closed Thursday morning, while another appears to be under new management.
Signs at Rodney Scott BBQ and Hero Diner in Homewood indicated the two restaurants are temporarily closed.
Little Donkey in Homewood was also shuttered. An employee there said the restaurant was undergoing an “ownership change” and would reopen tomorrow.
At Luca Lagotto on 28th Street South, the sign was covered with a new logo reading “Salice,” the Italian word for “willow,” and an employee said the restaurant was under new ownership. Chef Rita Bernhardt maintains her position.
Joyland in Avondale was open Thursday, as was Magnolia Point.
Pihakis Restaurant Group (PRG), one of Birmingham’s most prominent restaurant companies, is currently navigating two lawsuits totaling more than $1 million for unpaid bills, and liens in two counties from a developer with a total topping more than $12.6 million.
The company began closing restaurants on April 12, when Tasty Town Greek Restaurant and Lounge at 16 14th St. S. in Birmingham permanently shuttered.
This was followed by two more restaurant closures, one listed as temporary, and a statement that the company was seeking consultation, and that some restaurants might close temporarily, or in some cases, permanently.
Little more than a week later, many of the restaurants on the company’s roster were closed.
