The FIA has issued a statement in response to the concerns raised over the potential disruption of the Miami Grand Prix this weekend due to thunderstorms.
While Friday and Saturday at the event are expected to be held in hot and sunny conditions, Sunday’s race day could be a different affair.
On the weather radar is the possibility of thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall currently projected to hit the track as the race prepares to get underway.
The situation is made slightly more complex by a US law, which requires any major outdoor public event to be halted if there is an approaching thunderstorm due to the risk of lightning strikes.
In these scenarios, spectators are ordered to leave the relevant arena.
In the case for F1, the medical helicopter would not be allowed to take off, which directly halts any on-track activity from taking place.
However, the FIA has downplayed the significance of the forecast and insisted it has alternative plans in place should they be needed.
“We are closely monitoring the weather forecast for this weekend,” an FIA spokesperson told RacingNews365.
“Having faced a similar situation last year in Miami with threats of thunderstorms, we have a contingency plan in place and will activate it if needed to minimise disruption to the on-track programme.”

But should the weather cause problems, the FIA has the authority to adjust the start time of the race, which occurred at the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix.
