The New York Giants’ search for a veteran presence on the defensive line continues as six-time Pro Bowler Calais Campbell is heading back to the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year deal.
Campbell has also a clear connection with John Harbaugh, who now leads the Giants after his tenure in Baltimore ended last season. Still, there weren’t really any indications that Campbell and the Giants were going to unite.
Instead of reuniting with Harbaugh in New York, Campbell returns to a Ravens team now led by new head coach Jesse Minter. The move gives Baltimore a proven, reliable presence up front while closing the door on one of the Giants’ more sensible veteran options.
Even at nearly 40 years old, Campbell continues to produce. He has started 51 straight games over the past three seasons and totaled 18 sacks during that stretch. He added 6.5 sacks last season with the Arizona Cardinals and remains effective both as a pass rusher and run defender.
That kind of production is exactly what the Giants need. New York struggled heavily against the run last season, allowing 5.3 yards per carry, and has been working to rebuild the interior with a mix of inexperienced players and low-cost additions like Leki Fotu and Shelby Harris. The team has also been linked to D.J. Reader as it searches for a more complete solution.
Campbell would have brought not only on-field production but also leadership and durability. His 117 career sacks rank among the most of any active player, putting him in the same conversation as Von Miller, Cameron Jordan, and Myles Garrett.
For the Ravens, the signing is about adding a dependable veteran to a defensive front that needed immediate help. For the Giants, it’s another reminder that replacing Lawrence won’t be easy, and that proven options are quickly coming off the board.
New York will now have to keep searching for answers along the defensive line as the offseason continues.
